Vietnam is a rapidly developing country and becoming a more significant player on the international stage. A young and aspirational population want to take advantage of growing opportunities to make successful lives for themselves and create a healthy economy that will support the Vietnamese people into the future.
However, unlike more developed East Asian countries, the education system in Vietnam has not progressed beyond rote learning and frequent exams. This style of learning no longer prepares young people with the skills and knowledge required to thrive in the modern world.
At CED we aim to develop new teaching and learning methodology based on the best performing education systems around the world and introduce these into the Vietnamese national curriculum, giving young people skills relevant in the workplaces of today; teamwork, leadership, critical thinking, problem solving, environmental awareness and citizenship.
Our hope is that with these skills the next generation of young professionals will be able to help Vietnam catch up in the areas where it is currently falling behind, like new scientific research and civil society participation. A more robust education system now will result in a more informed, innovative and involved Vietnamese workforce in the future.
Education is the key to environmental protection, one of the most pressing issues facing Vietnam today. Recent awareness of the importance of environmental education for schoolchildren has led to the inclusion of environmental topics in the national curriculum. Yet current teaching methods are outdated and inadequate for cultivating environmental consciousness and the skills young people should have to contribute to solving environmental problems. To nurture a new generation of environmental leaders, we aim to build on classroom learning with educational programs that are hands-on and experiential, putting students in contact with environmental problems and solutions in the real world.
PILOTING GLOBE IN VIETNAM
The Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) program is a science education program that engages students ages 5-18 all over the world in hands-on learning about the environment. GLOBE provides scientific Protocols and extensive educational materials as well as access to online forums for students to share their data and connect with peers and scientists all over the world. The Vietnam National Satellite Center (VNSC) is partnering with the Center for Education and Development (CED) to pilot this program in Vietnam in late 2013. CED and VNSC successfully organized a kick-off workshop to introduce GLOBE to Vietnamese scientists and teachers and discuss plans for pilot programs in Hanoi in coming years.
OUTDOOR EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH
To promote life-long learning attitudes, outdoor education should be an integral part of the national curriculum. In the last few years, CED has been partnering with national parks, museums, and research institutes to develop outdoor independent exploration and hands-on education for school students in Hanoi and Nha Trang city, Khanh Hoa province. These activities are directly linked to a number of subjects in the national curriculum, including language, technology, science, citizen education, art, history, and geography. Thousands of students have participated in CED’s outdoor activities in the last few years.
SCIENCE EDUCATION FOR STUDENTS
Through participating in experiential science education activities, students gain a deeper understanding of the scientific method and improve their creativity and critical thinking skills. Hands-on and outdoor science education, as well as events such as science fairs that encourage independent thinking and experimental design, can be good ways to make science fun and accessible for students. CED works with teachers to organize events and field trips and develop lesson plans for introducing the scientific method and conducting science projects with students.
LITERACY FOR ENVIROMENTAL JUSTICE IN VIETNAM
To support environmental protection and sustainable development, in the last decade Vietnam has promoted public environmental awareness campaigns for the entire population, focusing especially on young people. At the moment, however, education about environmental awareness and conservation has still not been paid much attention in the schools. Most educational levels do not consider environmental conservation a subject, with the exception of some universities and colleges which have specialized courses in the environment.
Raising awareness and knowledge about environmental justice, and overcoming existing weaknesses, will require a long and continuous commitment across multiple generations and a dedicated investment of enthusiasm, effort and money.
Our ultimate goal will be to build and implement pilot programs and plan to coordinate and integrate education and environmental protection practices in schools to enhance the direct impact on students’ attitudes and behaviour toward the environment. Through these efforts, we will gain practical experience in the integration of environmental justice with the official school curriculum.

CONSERVATION EDUCATION AT THE ME LINH BIODIVERSITY STATION
An important step in protecting Vietnam’s extraordinary biological richness will be to bridge the divide between scientific research and education. We help to develop the capacity of the Me Linh Biodiversity Station in Vinh Phuc province as a center for field-based educational programs and citizen science. Through partnerships with scientists and local schools, we will create programs that are beneficial to the conservation goals of the station as well as educational for students of all ages. We hope to create a model for collaboration between conservation scientists and educators that can be replicated at research centers throughout Vietnam.
SUPPORTING SCHOLARSHIPS FOR POOR AND DISADVANTAGED GROUPS IN VIETNAM
Rural people in Vietnam and other countries without access to education or technical training are more likely to experience crop, livestock, or aquaculture failures, pushing them into poverty. This vicious cycle takes a toll not only on rural people but on their children, as uneducated parents are all too often unable to afford to educate their children, even though this education could ultimately help their families escape from the poverty trap. Although the government has expressed an interest in promoting access to higher education among the poor, many thousands of students across Vietnam have been left behind. CED supports scholarship and enrichment programs to give disadvantaged students a chance to succeed.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR FEMALE STUDENTS STUDYING TECHNICAL, HARD SCIENCES, ICT AND COMPUTER SCIENCES
Since 2011, the Center for Education and Development (CED) has been supporting long-term scholarships for more than 300 young women at 10 public universities in Vietnam studying technical and hard science disciplines including ICT and computer science. The program aims to attract female students to enroll in male-dominated majors and to support undergraduate education for qualified female students who would otherwise be unable to continue their education due to financial constraints.

STRENGTHENING PARENTAL PARTICIPATION IN EDUCATION
To enhance parental participation in fostering moral character and strengthening children’s educational skills and personal development, the Center for Education and Development (CED) supports activities to build stronger relationships between families and schools in Vietnam. These activities seek to create better opportunities for parents and teachers to work together effectively in developing and implementing educational activities for children. Activities include: i) Designing and implementing programs to involve parents in education for children about character and ethics; ii) Providing resources and guidance for how parents can support their children’s academic work at home; iii) Designing and organizing events and programs every year to provide a forum for parents to participate in their children’s education and the educational activities of the school.

EFFECTIVE VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM
Many workers today do not have the right knowledge and skills for the labor market, even if they attended vocational training run by state-owned training providers. It is an urgent task to improve the effectiveness of vocational training and job creation support programs (especially those for poor and disadvantaged groups) that contribute to reducing unemployment and underemployment rates, consequently minimizing related social issues. In partnerships with vocational training providers, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, and other NGOs, CED is supporting initiatives to enhance vocational training quality for disadvantaged groups in Vietnam.

SAFE MIGRATION AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING PREVENTION
Every year, many students without higher education or vocational training enter the labor force, so educating and empowering students and young potential migrants to better ensure safe migration and prevent human trafficking, labor exploitation and other abuses is an urgent task. Therefore, the Center for Education and Development (CED) has worked with other partners to develop safe migration education programs, providing knowledge and skills to help young people to migrate safely and more successfully.

While progress has been made over the last few years, there are still areas that need continued support if Vietnam is ever going to have an infrastructure and economy comparable to the most successful countries. As funding from the international community slows, it is vital that development programs find new funds from domestic sources. That’s why CED works with businesses to encourage investment into Vietnam’s future.
We work to show businesses that initiatives designed to help the Vietnamese people also help those same businesses. By educating decision makers and business leaders in the seriousness of climate change, disaster preparedness and forestry law and governance, and the benefits that come with serious philanthropic and CSR activity, we hope to encourage a culture in which Vietnamese industry will help to support the continued development of the country.
CLIMATE CHANGE AND DISASTER RISK MANAGEMENT
Climate change is an issue of global concern, particularly in Vietnam, already one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. The Center for Education and Development is working with a wide range of partners in public, private, and civil society organizations to support disaster readiness in the private and education sectors, targeting small and medium enterprises, local schools, and community learning centers.

CAPACITY BUILDING OF BUSINESS ASSOCIATIONS AND MEDIA TO ENGAGE IN FLEGT TO PROVIDE INFOMATION ON FLEGT AND RELATED ISSUES
Vietnam is planning to sign a voluntary partnership agreement (VPA) with the European Union which will mean that all timber must be officially issued with a Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) license to enter the European market. In that context, CED is working with media and business associations in Vietnam to communicate the advantages, important details and progress of VPA negotiations and issues related to FLEGT to the public and related stakeholders.

PROMOTING BUSINESS UNDERSTANDING AND ENGAGEMENT WITH STRATEGIC GIVING IN VIETNAM
As Vietnam continues to develop international donors are beginning to withdraw their support, so the resources necessary to address the country’s remaining challenges will increasingly have to come from domestic sources. While 90% of US businesses seek to gain publicity and popularity from their CSR activities, this culture is not yet prevalent among Vietnamese businesses.
CED aims to convince domestic businesses that contributing to civil society will improve their reputation among their potential customers, thereby encouraging sustainable funds for development initiatives from within the country.
